where the Stitch and Community matter®

My mother has a Merrow M3DW1 for over 10 years and never used it. I've decided to take up sewing as a new hobby. I'm literally being self taught, because my mother can't teach me and she can't find the manual.

I downloaded the manual for the M series but it's vague and the diagrams are in black and white. Then I followed a youtube video for another version, to the best of my abilities. But I don't think I did very great because I broke the needle and I have no clue on which needle to buy.

I have no clue what this machine can do and what needle is best for what. The website is not helping...I wish I could walk-in somewhere and get what I need. That's why I'm here...

What needle should I be starting with and what (website/establishment) can I learn  how to use this machine??

Thank you!

Maliessa,

well you've come to the right place...

your machine is designed to sew thin fabrics with an overedge seam.

What are you trying to sew (fabric) and where are you located?

(ps. you'll need a Merrow 1D needle!)

regards

Oh, great!

I'm sewing fabric and I'm located in Brooklyn, NY

Thank you so much

Charlie,
I'm looking for a  machine that can make a narrow rolled seam on light fabrics.
I've been offered a M-3DW-1 machine (for very little money..  ;-)  according to the serialnr, a 1963-1964 model),
but have already two overedge machines (stitch 504 and 514).
Can this merrow machine (the m-3dw-1) do a narrow rolled seam? Possible by changing presser foot, needle plate etc?
I hope so.....merrow machines are rare in this part of europe...very unforunate.....
best regards, Marc, Belgium.

Marc,

the 3DW-1 is going to have a tough time doing the narrow rolled hem that you're thinking of - although it certainly is possible to get close.

what are you sewing?

Hello Charlie,

I'm still trying to seek some help in learning how to thread my merrow. I was connected to a merrow representative, who gave me a NY distributor's number. In short they don't provide that type of service.

So what should be my next step?

Thanks,

Maliessa

Since February, I have been trying to thread my mother's M3DW1 merrow serger and nothing worked. I manage to break 3 needles and lost some screws.

How can anyone learn how to thread a merrow machine?

The A series was one of our original platforms. It describes a combination of frame and cam design. All A class machines are very much different... This machine was designed to sew lightweight woven material, likely for general serging. You will be…

Merrow A-3W

Hello Merrow Community,I recently purchased a Merrow A-3w overlock from eBay. According to the serial (59622) It was manufactured in the mid 30's. I was wondering if anyone knew about this model or how the model numbers are made up. Are all A series machines the same? I'm also looking to know the intended uses like if this was built for light/med material or can it handle heavier stuff like double layers of denim or canvas?Do owners manuals exist for them if so does anyone know where I can get…See More

I do something similar with my MG-3U when merrowing patches.  When I get back around to the starting point I overlap the beginning a couple of stitches and then with the needle up I slide the patch forward a bit to get the stitches off of the…

I think I figured it out. I start with about a 4-6"  chain. I start sewing with the edge under the needle. No cutter,(the material is precut and fixed to a freely rotating platform) When it comes around to the end I make sure I pull the…
