Hi Marion,

I too recently bought an old Class A-3DW machine that works as well as it ever did. These things are built like a tank and made for years of service which is good because I hop I never need to get it serviced. There are not many good mechanics for a Merrow locally unless you live in a textile area.
I use mine to finish the edges of patches or emblems as they like to call them. After some trial and error I finally settled on Success serger yarn for my thread. It works like a charm. Probably not as good as the new MG-3U model but for a few hundred, (vs. a few thousand), that I paid it works just fine.

Hi Mike,

We've been trying to thread the machine and with the threading diagram on this site had not much luck so far.
Maybe you know something that would help or do you know of any other clearer diagrams available?

the threading is simple after the first time you get it.
use a different colored pen to trace the lines.
there are 2 "tunnels " you need to go thru for the loopers.
A small thin wire is helpful for this.
the one for the lower looper is in front of, under and parallel with the feed dog.
for the upper looper it is under the discharge chute below the cutter.

Once you get it threaded, it also seems that the tighter you keep the thread tension, the tighter the stitch.
I have had no success in finding any operators manuals for this class machine.
However, the basic machine is not change in 100 years so you can download a current manual and get the basics.

Note; There does not seem to be a lot of activity on this site.

Hi Marion,

Glad you got your machine stitching. Sometimes threading these machines can be tough but Mike is right once you do it two or three times it's a breeze. I would be more than happy to help you find a mechanic in your area or help you with a manual. We are not working today but we will be back in the office on Monday if you have any questions I would be glad to help.

These old black machines can be picked up pretty cheap it seems.
I can't imagine how much better a new one would be.

Yup, they're great. Love ours at the studio. Just remember to watch the oil level in your machine. Ours uses about 10 times any other machine in our studio, but man...totally worth it. We only fill it halfway and it seems to work better.
